The Mars Volta 1 Mars Volta, De-Loused in the Comatorium
From the ashes of At the Drive-In

This CD definitely caught us off guard this year. With an opening slot on the Red Hot Chili Peppers European tour, they got just enough press to perk our ears. We decided to give it a listen and could not have been happier about it.

De-Loused in the Comatorium tells the story of a childhood friend of the band who followed his fearlessness to a self-inflicted end. Sound depressing? Well it definitely is, but then again it is intense, artsy, and very powerful. Led-inspired pounding gives way to the thump of a free jazz bass with blasts of guitar in between. Guitarist Omar Rodriguez proves his chops and singer Cedric Bixler screeches with delight. This powerful CD was without a doubt, the CD of the year.
